Names
Hannoa kitombetombe Gilbert [family SIMAROUBACEAE], in Bull. Jard. Bot. Brux. 28: 382 (1958). — Gilbert, F.C.B. 7: 124 (1958). Type from the Congo.
Hannoa klaineana [family SIMAROUBACEAE], sensu White, F.F.N.R.: 172 (1962).
Information
Tree up to 16 m. tall. Leaves 15–35 cm. long, with 5 pairs of opposite leaflets, glabrous, glaucescent, coriaceous, petioles 4–8 cm. long with two wings above which form a channel; leaflet laminas 6–12 × 2·5–4·5 cm., oblanceolate to narrowly oblong, refuse to emarginate at the apex, cuneate at the base, margin entire (with 2–3 depressed glands above), lateral nerves fine and delicate, immersed; petiolules 0·5–1 cm. long. Inflorescences paniculate, c. 15 cm. long; branches very sparsely puberulous; bracts minute, caducous; pedicels c. 1 mm. long, ± puberulous. Calyx 2 mm. long, 2–4-lobed, grey-puberulous. Petals c. 4 mm. long, puberulous. Stamens 10, c. 3·5 mm. long. Ovary c. 1 mm. long; styles c. 0·5 mm. long. Infructescence c. 25 cm. long, a broad, sparsely branched panicle, branches puberulous. Mericarps 1–3-together on the fruiting pedicels, c. 2·5 cm. long, ± ellipsoid; pericarp smooth.
Habitat
from evergreen forest
Range
So far recorded only from evergreen forest (mushitu) in the north of Rhodesia and Upper Katanga.
Distribution
Zambia N Kawambwa Distr., Lusengu, fr. 27.viii.1957, Fanshawe 3671 (K; NDO; SRGH).
Notes
Flowering material has not yet been seen from our area; the flower descriptions are based on the type specimen from the Congo. It is possible that H. kitombetombe may eventually prove to be a form of H. klaineana Pierre ex Engl. but in the limited material at our disposal leaflet size and shape appears to give a clearcut distinction between the two taxa. In the former species the leaflets are narrowly ovate to obovate and are usually 10–1 3 cm. long.
