Tufted annual 30–100 cm. high with few, rather unequal rays bearing clusters of oblong, often dark-spotted, spikelets of broadly ovate, obtuse glumes; marshes and near open water.
Habitat

[Very slender, perhaps depauperate specimens corresponding to the var. debilis Kük. occur on the margins of lateritic hard pans in Sierra Leone (Jordan 884 etc.) and have 1–3 spikelets only.]
