Information
Shrub or small tree, 2–5 m, rarely up to 10 m, well-branched with drooping habit, bark grey. Leaves ± coriaceous, ovate, 4–9 cm long, 2–5 cm wide, base rounded to shortly cuneate, apex acuminate, margins serrate to irregularly serrulate to almost entire, usually entire in the apical part, glabrous, minutely glandular-punctate beneath; petiole 4–10 mm long. Flowers pendulous, usually 2–4 in leaf axils, many more aggregated on leafless stems. Pedicel 10–11 mm; bracteoles lanceolate, ± 2 mm, inserted below the middle of the pedicel. Calyx cup-shaped, lobes 4–5 mm, rounded at apex, spreading. Corolla tube orange-red, curved, 2–2.5(–3.5) cm, lobes rounded, 2 mm, obliquely zygomorphic. Stamens exserted ± 8 mm beyond the corolla lobes; style exserted. Fruit a berry, purple-black when ripe, ovoid, 1.5–2x0.7–1.5 cm, cupped by the calyx and often topped by the style. Seeds ellipsoid, somewhat plano-convex; testa thin, punctate, with a narrow marginal wing. Fig. 8.
