Information
Tree 8–18 m tall; bark grey; young branches brownish, striate with scattered small glands, older branches grey-brown, striate, lenticellate, leaves 3–5-jugate, 20–36≈(17–)20–25(–30) cm, including petiole of up to 10 cm, rachis striate, puberulous; leaflets at least twice as long as broad, oblong to elliptic, (6–)8.5–16.5≈(2–)3.5–6 cm including petiolule of up to 3 mm long, rounded and frequently unequal at the base, margins repand to serrate, obtuse to acuminate at the apex, the lowermost pair frequently cordate; terminal elliptic, (6–)9–12≈4.5–4.7 cm; young leaflets glandular and with scattered hairs on both surfaces, mature leaflets with a few scattered large glands particularly toward the base, with hairs restricted to the midrib above and to the veins beneath. Flowers borne singly or in few-flowered inflorescences either from the axils of the leaves or cauliflorous, usually with the leaves (but see note below); peduncles where present 0.3–2.2 cm long, minutely hairy; bracteoles caducous, 3–4≈1–2 mm; pedicels 2–5 cm long, minutely hairy. Calyx broadly campanulate, 2–3(–3.5)≈2.5–3.5(–4) cm, 2–3-lobed, minutely hairy, chartaceous; lobes elliptic to broadly elliptic, margins scarious. Corolla dark maroon, reddish brown, orange-red or scarlet, yellow in the throat, broadly campanulate, (5–)6–8(–8.5)≈(5–)6–10(–11) cm; lobes broadly elliptic to obovate to cordiform; tube 3.5–4 cm long; filaments 3.5–4.5 cm long, adnate to the corolla for ± 5 mm in the constricted base of the tube; thecae 5–8 mm long, divaricate; staminode 0.5–1 cm long, cupular; ovary ± 1 cm long, usually pubescent with greyish white hairs (see note); style ± 5 cm long; stigma lobes 2–2.5≈2–2.5 mm, rounded at the apex. Disk thick, cupular. Fruit up to 60 cm long, 1–1.2 cm wide, slightly striate, minutely glandular; seeds not seen. Fig. 10.9–10.13, p. 41.
