Information
Loosely tufted perennial, the culms geniculately ascending from a knotty rootstock; culms 30–60 cm. high, slender. Leaf-blades linear, 4–15 cm. long, 2–4 mm. wide. Panicle subspiciform, 5–17 cm. long, interrupted, with very short appressed branchlets, at least the longer branchlets terminating in a bristle 2–5 mm. long, but these inconspicuous. Spikelets lanceolate, 2.5–3.5 mm. long; glumes obtuse to subacute, the lower 1/4, the upper 1/2 as long as the spikelet; lower floret ♂, its lemma with a median groove widening towards the base, its palea as long as and broader than the lemma with coriaceous keels; upper lemma rugose, ± 0.5 mm. shorter than the lower lemma.

Notes
This species is closely related to H. canaliculatum (Steud.) Stapf & Hubbard from southern India and Sri Lanka. The latter has subequal lemmas, the upper being finely and rather indistinctly rugose.
