Information
Shrub or small tree, 1.5–2.5(–5) m. tall; bark brown, lenticellate. Tips of branchlets velvety. Leaf-blades ovate or oblong-ovate, apex shortly acuminate, base rounded to subcordate, thin to papyraceous, velvety when young, subglabrous above and pubescent beneath when mature, denticulate, 5–8 cm. long, 4–7 cm. broad; lateral nerves 5–7 curved-ascending pairs, raised beneath, reticulation rather dense; petiole (1–)1.5–3 cm. long; stipules subulate, caducous, ± 5 x 1 mm. Flowers on peduncles (1.5–)2–2.5 cm. long, ± pendulous. Sepals suborbicular, pubescent, ± 6 mm. in diameter. Petals obovate-spathulate, white, ± 1.5 cm. long, 6–7 mm. broad. Capsule subglobose, pubescent, ± 1 cm. across, with 4 linear subacute wings ± 1.5 cm. x 1 mm., splitting into 4 patent valves. Seeds 1 or 2, subglobular, blackish, glossy, 5–6 mm. in diameter, the base provided with a red aril. Fig. 3.
