Spikelets lanceolate, 6–9 mm. long, dark brown, the glumes and lower lemma setose from black tubercles; lower glume ovate-elliptic, usually ± 1/2 as long as the spikelet, narrowly obtuse to subacute; upper glume lanceolate, as long as the spikelet, obtuse; lower lemma similar to the upper glume; upper lemma 3.5–5 mm. long, sparsely pubescent, obscurely and usually obtusely bilobed (lobes less than 0.2 mm. long); awn 2–3 cm. long; callus narrowly oblong, 0.5–1 mm. long, 2-toothed; stamens 2.

Notes
L. kagerensis is closely allied to L. simplex, being best distinguished by the poorly developed lobes of the upper lemma. Other distinguishing characters are the shorter spikelets which are always setose, the relatively longer subacute lower glume, and the wiry culms with shorter leaf-blades. There is some overlap between the species, but on the whole they are not difficult to distinguish.
