Notes
H. schimperi is a polymorphic species, different populations varying especially in the compactness of the inflorescence, length of the pedicels, size of the spikelets and the degree to which the lemma-tips are acuminately extended into awns. Ill-defined geographical variants can be detected; for example specimens from northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia (e.g. Gillett 12818, Oteke 145, Bogdan 3425) are usually characterized by relatively broad lemmas with shortly acuminate tips, whereas those from southern Kenya and parts of northern Tanzania (e.g. Hitchcock 24740, Glover. Gwynne & Samuel [ Paulo ] 244, Paulo 340) often have much larger spikelets, with narrower conspicuously acuminate-aristate lemma-tips. However, such forms cannot profitably be recognized taxonomically as the geographical distinctions are not sufficiently constant and every variation can be found between these two extremes.
