Leaves fairly thin to distinctly subcoriaceous, mostly oblong or oblong-elliptic, less often elliptic-oblanceolate or narrowly elliptic, 3.5–15.5 cm long, 1–6.4 cm wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, narrowly cuneate at the base, serrate or often almost entire; lateral veins ± 9, ascending, in depressions above but actual vein prominent, more prominent beneath; secondary veins numerous, ± parallel and at right-angles to midrib and tertiary reticulate venation between; petiole ± 4(–6) mm long; stipules 3 mm long, striate, aristate, soon deciduous. Inflorescences subterminal, 4–12 cm long, shorter or sometimes much shorter than subtending leaf; cymes 1–2(–6)-flowered; peduncle ± 1 cm long; pedicels 5–6 mm long, enlarging to 13 mm in fruit. Notes
Material referred to G. bukobensis in East Africa during the past century can be more or less sorted into two taxa. One has thin narrowly elliptic-lanceolate leaves with closer more curved usually spinulose teeth. Much of this has been determined as Ouratea floribunda De Wild. and matches the type of that and many specimens of it are determined as Campylospermum bukobense by Farron. The other has more coriaceous more oblong, often wider leaves with fewer less spinulose teeth or sometimes partly entire and at least one specimen of this has been annotated as C. vogelii var. poggei (Engl.) Farron by Farron. I have not seen any type material of Ouratea bukobensis but many specimens are available from the Bukoba area; none of these at Kew have been annotated by Farron but I believe they belong to the second taxon. Robson has annotated Bukoba material as Ouratea hiernii (Tiegh.) Exell in which he includes O. bukobensis and O. poggei (Engl.) Gilg but excludes O. floribunda De Wild (see F.Z. 2: 256–7 (1963)) thus agreeing with my treatment. It must be admitted that the differences are small and specimens often difficult to place, the serration being particularly variable. Ouratea bukobensis and O. floribunda have been considered synonymous by most workers and Farron has continued this but he annotated a specimen of true bukobensis from Uganda as vogelii. I am keeping up two species and hope that some really informative field work will settle the problem.Farron records Campylospermum vogelii var. poggei from Sudan, Congo (Kinshasa), Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Angola; he also gives the maximum height attained as 25 m and trunk 45 cm in diameter. Nothing of this size has been found in East Africa. Nowhere does he say how the variety differs from the species.
