Fruiting sepals broader and more imbricated, (10–)12–18 mm long, 9 mm wide; inflorescence rhachis often more developed, corolla lemon yellow to bright yellow.

Bamps does not recognise subsp. congoensis (Tiegh.) Robson nor subsp. mechowiana (O. Hoffm.) Robson but sinks them without comment. There does seem to be a difference between theT 7 material and the rest and I have retained subsp. mechowiana. Since Robson records both subsp. afzelii and subsp. mechowiana from Mbala varietal rank might be more appropriate.
