Information
Scrambling perennial succulent herb, occasionally prostrate, 0.6–3(–10) m long or high; stems rather succulent, pale green, often variegated with pale yellow green and purple, slightly angular, glabrous. Leaves rather succulent, pinnate-lyrately lobed or compound, 3.7–22 cm long, 1–14 cm wide, with 1–4 pairs of spreading or ± recurving ovate to oblong lobes and a larger ± triangular, sometimes basally deeply 2-lobulate, terminal lobe, the very base with conspicuous basal semi-amplexicaul rounded auricles, margins coarsely sinuate-dentate or sinuate-laciniate to sinuate-lobulate, apex acute, often attenuate, glabrous or almost so (rarely slightly puberulous), often glaucous, especially beneath. Capitula discoid (see note), strongly scented, numerous in terminal stalked loose thyrses of stalked, usually congested subumbelliform corymbs, the whole inflorescence often pendent, the distal part sometimes turned up, strongly scented; stalks of capitula glabrous or shortly pubescent; involucre cylindrical, 6.5–10.5 mm long, 2–5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 2–4, lanceolate, 1.2–2 mm long, glabrous or shortly pubescent on margins and apex; phyllaries 5–8, pale green, often with dull purple tinge at apex and base, 6–10 mm long. Ray florets nearly always absent; disc florets dull golden yellow, corolla 5.5–9.5 mm long, tube glabrous, gradually slightly expanded from below the middle, lobes 1.3–2 mm long. Achenes 3–3.5 mm long, ribbed, shortly hairy in the grooves; pappus 5.5–8 mm long. Fig. 137 (page 677).
