Notes
The only species in our area which has blue to purple flowers, although they can sometimes be pinkish and G. similiopsis has been described likewise. G. similis is very close to G. occidentalis, which only occurs S of the Zambezi R. Schumann separated G. similis from G. occidentalis by the presence of 6 ovules in each locule as opposed to 4; both Wilczek and Sebsebe give 4 ovules per locule in their descriptions of G. similis. The difference between these two species seems unclear, though their ranges do not overlap. G. occidentalis, in general, only has 1–3 flowers per inflorescence, is less pubescent on the stems, petioles and inflorescences, and the leaves have a more acute apex (except for var. litoralis ). B.D. Burtt 1592 (Kondoa District, near Kolo, 18 Jan. 1928) records this species as having white flowers. Albino forms could cause confusion with G. ferruginea, but that species has leaves with acute to acuminate apices. In Uganda and W Tanzania G. similis is frequently found in association with ant-hills and termite mounds. It has occasionally been cultivated as an ornamental in East Africa (Nairobi, Fox 3275).
