Information
Perennial herb with deciduous aerial parts. Rhizome linear, (5–)9–30(–41) mm long, (1–)1.5–2(–3) mm wide; roots few, fleshy, sub-horizontal, proliferous. Leaves commonly single, rarely two; stipe (14–)30–84(–110) mm long, 30–50% of its length subterranean, stipe:lamina length ratio 1–1.8:1, old stipe bases usually not persistent; lamina mid- to bright green, held at 60–90° from the horizontal, elliptic to very narrowly elliptic, rarely oblanceolate, flat or shallowly canaliculate in fertile leaves, (8–)21–48(–75) mm long, (2–)4–8(–12) mm wide, length:width ratio 3.3–8.8:1 (depending upon shading), apex acute, apiculate, base narrowly cuneate to attenuate, margins even; venation elongate throughout with some secondary venation and a few blind veinlets, median band lacking; epidermal cells sub-isodiametric with wavy anticlinal walls; stomata sometimes aligned. Fertile spike (20–)47–101(–162) mm long, fertile spike:lamina length ratio 2.2–3:1, with (6–)8–16(–30) pairs of sporangia. Spores of variable equatorial diameter, (37–)42–61(–75) µm, alete or trilete, rarely monolete, muri clearly reticulate, uniformly narrow, lumina broad, flat-bottomed and of variable diameter, the muri sometimes coalescing to form areas of fine reticulation enclosing small pit-like lumina, granules absent.
