DISTR. U1–4; K3, 5–7; T1–4, 6, 8; Z; P widespread throughout tropical Africa, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, also introduced into Australia and the New World

0–1350 m.

Although the seeds are usually of the well-known black and red coloration, specimens with entirely black seeds have been collected, e.g. Tanganyika, Moshi, Gutmann in Peter 48776! and Morogoro District, Kwedihombo to Turiani, 18 Nov. 1914, Peter 49623 !
