Range
A fairly large genus in tropical America, about 20 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar and rather more in the rest of the Old World tropics, though the generic limits become particularly critical in those parts. Two exotic species are recorded from East Africa, both from coastal and near-coastal areas.
Notes
Considerable difficulty may be experienced in attempting to name leaves of Chrysophyllum species derived from sapling or sucker growth. A wide range of leaf-size and colour of indumentum may be observed in some species, e.g. C. gorungosanum Engl., where the indumentum may vary from a pale silvery-brown on the under surface of sapling leaves to the deep ferrugineous brown coloration of crown leaves. Whenever possible mature crown leaves should be obtained and the following key is based primarily on characters derived from such material.
