Names
ASTRIPOMOEA malvacea (Klotzsch) Meeuse [family CONVOLVULACEAE], in Bothalia 6 : 710 (1958). Types : Mozambique, Inhambane and Sena, Peters (B, syn. †)
Information
An extremely variable subshrubby perennial; stems several, prostrate or erect, ± densely stellately tomentose, arising from a woody rootstock. Leaf-blade elliptic to broadly ovate, 1.7–12 cm. long, 0.8–9 cm. wide, acute or rounded and mucronulate at the apex, cuneate to subcordate at the base; petiole up to 7.5 cm. long. Inflorescences axillary; peduncle 0–7 cm. long; flowers 2–6 in loose umbellate cymes; pedicels up to 7 mm. long; bracts elliptic to ovate, up to 11 mm. long and 7 mm. wide; midrib prominent. Sepals lanceolate to orbicular, 5–10 mm. long, 2.5–8 mm. wide, acute or obtuse at the apex, tomentose outside, glabrescent inside; midrib prominent. Corolla funnel-shaped with a narrow tube, 2.5–5 cm. long, entirely mauve or purple. Capsule subglobose, glabrous, 10–11 mm. in diameter. Seeds ovoid, compressed, 4.5–5.5 mm. long, blackish-brown with small tufts of hair around the hilum, otherwise glabrous.
Notes
This species is divisible into exceedingly ill-defined varieties all of which are connected by intermediates. The extremes are, however, so distinct that they have all been described as separate species on several occasions. Tanner 2671 and 2208, from Tanganyika, Pangani, may represent a new variety. It is a plant with small elliptic leaves which are not whitish below.
