Information
Twining perennial herb with slender, thinly pubescent or glabrescent stems, sometimes rooting in pools. Leaves shortly petiolate; blade narrowly elliptic, up to 7 cm. long and 2 cm. wide, obtuse at the apex but minutely mucronate, cuneate at the base, glabrescent or thinly pubescent, particularly at margins and on the nerves below; petiole up to 1 cm. long. Flowers usually solitary; peduncle up to 4 cm. long. Sepals ovate, 8(–16) mm. long, acute, enlarging to 22 mm. in fruit and becoming scarious and venose. Corolla white, 2 cm. long and 2.5 cm. wide. Capsule elongate-ovoid, glabrous, 1.5 cm. long. Seeds black, about 4.5 mm. in diameter, with a tuft of brown hairs near the hilum and also scattered flat hairs. Fig. 13, p. 47.

VARIATION. Hallier refers Zanzibar material and some West African and other material to a var. ambigua said to be distinguished by more rounded and subcordate sepals etc. but the material I have seen does not deviate much from typical material.
