Names
HIRTELLA megacarpa R. Grah. [family CHRYSOBALANACEAE], in K.B. 1957: 231 (1957). Type: Tanganyika, W. Usambara Mts., Shagai Forest, Drummond & Hemsley 2614 (K, holo.!, EA, iso.!)
Information
A tall tree, probably evergreen, up to 25 m. high. Branchlets pubescent. Leaves coriaceous, oblong-elliptic, up to 8 × 2.8 cm., acuminate to caudate-acuminate, basally cuneate or rounded, matt on both faces or somewhat shining above, glabrous except the midrib beneath which is pubescent with rather long hairs, clearly reticulately nerved but especially markedly so beneath; the midrib of the under-surface very prominent but the primary nerves rather less so than in the preceding species. Inflorescences not seen. Flowers imperfectly known. Calyx-tube 11 m. long, apparently neither unilaterally gibbous nor abruptly enlarged at the base, slightly expanded above, deeply grooved in the upper part, thickly velutinous; the lobes eglandular, ± 5 mm. long. Stamens 8 mm. (? or more) long, orientated as in the preceding species, and the staminodes likewise. Fruit oblong-ovoid, obtuse, basally narrowed, up to 3.5 × 1.8 cm.; pericarp green, minutely pubescent outside, lanate within. Seed 1, red, with scattered surface hairs.
Range
DISTR. T3, 7 not known elsewhere.
Altitude range
1350–1950 m.
Distribution
TANGANYIKA Lushoto District W. Usambara Mts., Shagai Forest, near Sunga, May 1953, Drummond & Hemsley 2614!TANGANYIKA Shagai Forest, May 1953, Procter 221!;TANGANYIKA Iringa District Nyumbanitu, Sept. 1958, Ede 68
Notes
Although the floral parts suggest some distinctions from H. zanzibarica, it must be recorded that only one imperfect flower was available for investigation. For the time being, therefore, this species is distinguished from H. zanzibarica on its vegetative and fruit characters, and the floral characters described above should be accepted with reserve.
