CYPERUS ochrocephalus C. B. Clarke [family CYPERACEAE], in Trans. Linn. Soc. ser. 2, Bot. iv. 53; Rendle in Cat. Afr. Pl. Welw. ii. 112; not Ryncospora ochrocephala, Boeck.
Information
Rhizome oblique, 4 by 1/8– 1/6 in., clothed by stout ovate acute striate pale brown scales 1/2– 2/3 in. long. Stem solitary on the rhizome, 4–12 in. long. Leaves often as long as the stem, 1/6 in. broad. Bracts and head as of C. compactus, Lam.

Mount Malosa, 4000–6000 ft., Whyte!Angola Lower Guinea Huilla; on dry hills near Lake Ivantala, 5000 ft., Welwitsch, 6838! Golungo Alto; Sobato de Bumba, Welwitsch, 6813! marshy banks of the River Quiapoze, Welwitsch, 7014! Malange, Mechow, 182!
Notes
I cannot distinguish this species from C. compactus unless I have the rhizome. The spikelets are many-flowered; and my naming it (l.c.) in 1894 C. ochrocephalus (which species has 3–2-flowered spikelets) was an error. The style is always 3-fid with me.
