P. platyphylla was d in Kew Bull. 32: 638 (1978) as being distinct but close to P. phillipsiae (now P. villosa), differing in its narrowly lanceolate calyx-lobes. Furthermore, the indumentum is more dense and fine, and the leaves are not acuminate as in P. phillipsiae. A third variety, var. kimbozensis (Bremek.) Bridson with longer calyx-lobes, is restricted to Tanzania (Kimboza).
