glabrous; stolons 0; stem 2–3 ft. long, rather stout, triangular at the top, smooth; leaves often as long as the stem, 1/4– 1/3 in. broad; umbel 6–10 in. in diam.; bracts 3–4, similar to the leaves, lowest often 12–18 in. long; umbellules (secondary umbels) nearly or quite bractless; spikes elongate, often 1 1/2 in. long, of 36 spikelets, nodding, more or less corymbosely compound at the base; spikelets (even in fruit) suberect, 1/3 by 1/16– 1/12 in., 8–20-flowered, compressed, brown; wings of rhachilla yellow, lanceolate, acute; soon disarticulate, caducous; glumes closely imbricate, ovate, acute, 5–7-nerved, hardly keeled; stamens 3; anthers linear-oblong, connective somewhat produced in a short triangle; nut hardly 2/5 the length of the glume, triangular; oblong-ellipsoid, pyramidal-topped, pale brown; style as long as the nut, branches 3 linear, longish. null
