Engelmann deferred answering Hooker's letter of 20 Sep as he thought he would visit RBG Kew before winter. However, at present this is impossible. Since leaving Hooker in Switzerland, Engelmann has been in Bonn and Munich and is shortly going to Frankfurt, his headquarters, to prepare for his Italian journey. He hopes to be able to spare a few weeks in England, especially at Kew, before he sails. He is afraid he has disappointed Dr Hooker regarding his Indian Euphorbieae. If Dr Hooker has selected and laid them out for him he will try and do them before he leaves Europe. Engelmann wonders if Dr Hooker would send these, along with those he put aside as unknown, to him in Frankfurt. Engelmann has spent eight or ten days in Geneva, principally with Mr De Candolle and Mr Boissier. De Candolle will do the Euphorbieae for the PRODROMUS[?] but the genus Euphorbia will be worked out by Boissier. Dr Seemann, who has been to see Englemann's friends in St Louis, will oblige him if he sends the parcel brought for Engelmann to Mr Julius Engelmann, Frankfurt. Engelmann hopes that the terrible financial crisis, under which the United States of America now suffers, will spare their friends there. Engelmann had proposed to Mr Shaw at St Louis to buy the herbarium of the late Bernhardi of Erfurt. It is estimated to contain 30,000 species and they offered $600. Shaw has authorised Engelmann to make the acquisition provided the collection was in good condition. Shaw is also very anxious to commence a collection like Hooker's museum. Pages 1 and 4 of 4.
