Scotchmer wishes to add to his personal collection of cacti and has found that although there are many varieties of cactus to be found wild in the United States of America, there are very few in American collections. Scotchmer's collection is the second best in the western states and contains 40 varieties. If Hooker cannot supply cacti himself, Scotchmer asks that he recommend who they can be procured from.
