Eaton is grateful for Hooker's letter and favour. The 'Pilotrichum rugulosum' is not in his Hawaiian collection but he has a probable 'congener' with much broader leaves. As to 'Thamnium neckeroides', he has still to say that Müller, Sullivant and Lesquereux all say that Drummond's American moss is what they now call Thamnium alleghaniense and is not equal to Menzie's moss. Eaton has not found that anyone since Menzies has collected either species on the north west American coast. Menzie's plant may, therefore, have come from some other place, unless Hooker has some original note proving where it was found. Eaton will gladly send Hooker a set of the Hawaiian mosses when his paper is out. He shall have nearly 100 species to distribute. He would be glad of any E. Indian mosses Hooker may have to spare; he only has a few scraps sent him by a missionary. Eaton hopes Hooker will greatly enjoy his house at Sunningdale. Eaton's own wife and children are in fair health. His oldest son died last summer of a wound received while gunning and they, naturally, watch the others with double anxiety. Annotation notes that 'Thamnium neckeroides N.W. coast of America' is in the writing of Sir William Hooker. Further annotation by 'DO' [Daniel Oliver] notes that of Indian Musci, set 23 of Griffith named by Mitten, was set aside for Eaton.
