[Letter to Hooker as Professor of Botany, University of Glasgow] Imray has received letters from Hooker and from the Duke of Bedford. He has sent another parcel of dried specimens for Hooker and a box of cacti for ‘his Grace’ on the ‘Jane Lockhart’, noting that there are only six different species of cacti. Imray thanks Hooker for giving his name to the new Caccinium and for sending the volume of the JOURNAL PLANTARUM RANORUM in which it was published. He asks for Hooker’s opinion on the plants from the Conliabon mountain [see folio 52]. He has made another trip there and draws Hooker’s attention to the Melastomataceae, marked 258, which he has only seen on Conliabon. He goes on to describe his trip to the mountain and the attributes of the French coffee planter who accompanied him. Imray regrets that the season’s weather will prevent him from collecting for some months, and describes the imminent wet season that could bring hurricanes. He mentions receiving a request for a box of cacti and orchid roots from Thomas Harris Esquire of Kingsbury, Middlesex, but has not had time to organise these. Imray fears that a full written account of his journey to the mountains, as requested by Hooker for publication in the ANNALS [OF NATURAL HISTORY], will not be of much interest to the readership.
