Arnott informs Hooker that after returning from a lecture, he called on Mr Wardroper, from St Mary's Chapel, who promised to put in a good word for Arnott to Mr Walter Buchannan, the seconder to Mr Oswald at the election. During Arnott’s visit to Ediburgh he saw Mr Wardroper and was informed that Buchannan had pledged himself to Scouler and applied to Mr Oswald on his behalf. Arnott writes that at the time of the passing of the Reform Bill, Scouler was extremely active as a Whig party member and was promised by the party that they would not forget him. Scouler reminded them of their promise and, although government have withdrawn their usual donations and funding from the Dublin Society, so Scouler has been told that, due to his previous services, he will not suffer from the withdrawal of the money. Several members of government are, therefore, in favour of giving Scouler the chair there. Arnott states that Mr Buchannan agrees that Dr Balfour would be preferred, from having the Edinburgh Whig interest and above all the Lord Advocat's. According to Arnott, either the Lord Advocat has altered his opinion of him [Arnott] since last autumn, or Mr Buchannan is wrong.
