Beddome is sending herewith: specimens of Beesha rheedei[?]; a new species of Octotropis; legumes of Acrocarpus fraxinifolius. Hundreds of acres of Beesha rheedei have been flowering and dying out on the western slopes of the hills below Sispara, 3000 to 4500 feet. Beddome has been down this ghat almost every year since 1856 and is sure it has never flowered. It dies when it flowers, which he is sure Beesha travancorica does not. It differs in many other respects also. Beddome is sending ripe fruits to Thwaites and shall ask him to send some to Hooker. In the packet, Beddome is also sending about 100 packets of mosses, which he would like sent to Mr Mitten for naming. Beddome is now collecting these and will send Hooker a complete set when named. They are all collected in the Nilgiris. He is now off down Tinnevelly [Tirunelveli] way, where he shall get lots. Mitten can keep any duplicates and name anything that may be undescribed. Beddome will send more of any particular numbers if required. He sent Hooker a large box the other day full of Aerides lindleyana, a delicately scented orchid, which grows there at 6000 feet; as well as Coelogyne corrugata, a Saccolabium and a large root of Lastrea scabrosa. If Hooker establishes the orchids Beddome would be obliged if he would let his [Beddome's] wife have a small plant of the Aerides and Coelogyne. The attached note in a different hand expresses thanks for the three phanerophytes and trusts that Beddome will not forget his promise to send them a set of mosses. Pages 1 and 4 of 6.
