Duthie is sending a parcel containing specimens of Impatiens collected in Hazara last year. He also encloses two drawings, by his Parsee [Parsi] draughtsman [not attached], of the two species which are flowering there just now in profusion. The yellow flowered one is I. scabrida and the other, possibly I. amphorata. Duthie is putting in some dried specimens of these and a small quantity of fresh seed of each. He wishes he could take his draughtsman to where I. glauca grows. He remembers gathering it in the Kumaon and noticing the peculiar, tiny, filiform, tendril like appendages at the bases of the leaves. The parcel also contains a set of Mussoorie and Dehra Dun [Dehradun] orchids collected this year, and a few Primulas collected last year in Hazara. He would be glad of a second opinion on some of the Orchids before he publishes them as new species. The Habenaria, which he was asked to name after Lord Elgin by his daughter Lady Elizabeth, is quite distinct from H. pectinata. Collett has asked Duthie to send him a description of it for his Simla [Shimla] Flora. As to the 'H. elizabethae' Duthie had intended naming it after Mr Babington Smith with whom he has corresponded frequently about Simla plants collected by him and his wife. Babington Smith, however, suggested 'H. elizabethae' would be more appropriate, corresponding to H. susannae, named after the daughter of an Indian Governor General. Lady Elizabeth is a most enthusiastic botanist, producing some capital water colour drawings of a large number of Simla plants. Amongst the plants found by her and Mr Babington Smith in the neighbourhood of Simla are: Galeola falconeri, Fritillaria cirrhosa, Oreocharis micrantha and a new species of Lathraea, which Duthie had previously discovered in Jaunsar. Duthie has failed to identify three of the four Primulas sent. Duthie's draughtsman has produced several coloured drawings of Mussoorie orchids for the ANNALS OF THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDEN, CALCUTTA. Duthie has met the geologist Mr Tom [Thomas Henry Digges] la Touche who asks to be remembered to Hooker. Pages 1 and 4 of 7.
