Blanford has despatched, by parcel post, two boxes of fern roots, dried prior to packing, and he hopes they will reach Morris alive. The species are: Davallia pulchra, Onychium japonicum, Nephrodium filix-mas, Polypodium membranaceum, P. microrhizoma, P. distans, P. simplex, P. clathratum, P. lineare and P. rivale. There is also one root each of Cheilanthes dalhousiae, Asplenium schimperi and Gymnogramma fraxinea. He can only send such kinds as can stand drying and packing in boxes. He cannot readily procure a Wardian case and, even if he could, it would be little use on the long journey by cart, train and steamer without anyone to look after the contents. Blanford hopes to be at home next June and shall visit RBG Kew to determine some of the difficult species of his Simla [Shimla] ferns. He hopes to find the roots he has sent flourishing there and will be able to help Morris if he has any doubts to their identity. Annotation by 'W.W.'
