Hoernlé quotes a paragraph from the February number of THE INDIA ANTIQUARY, by a native, S. Sofaramaiya. The quote refers to a Stobilanthus plant that grows extensively in the Palni Hills. Though very common, usually only a few stray plants flower each year. This year there has been an extensive bloom. The Hill people call the plant 'Kurinji' and believe it blooms only once in 12 years. Hoernlé asks if Prain knows this plant. The Sanskrit dictionaries do not give the name 'Kurinji'. They have 'Karanja', but according to the first volume of Dymock, this is Pongamia glabra, a tree. 'Kulanjo' or 'Kalinja' according to Dymock, volume three, is Alpinia galangal. Dymock, volume three, also has Strobilanthes callosus, apparently a kind of Hygrophila spinosa, which he thinks might be the plant in question. He hopes Mr and Mrs Prain are well and notes that his wife's broken arm is healing. Page contains note in another hand stating the plant may be S. pulneyensis or S. heteromallus.
