Wood thanks the Director for some papers on sugar cane diseases and copies of the 'Kew Bulletin'. He singles out the notes by Mr. Barber about Alectra brasiliensis and Striga euphrasioides as being particularly useful, especially as they have two similar species – Striga coccinea and S. forbesii – in Natal which can be harmful to Maize crops. He says these plants are popularly known as 'Witch weeds' and he discusses the frequent requests he receives from farmers about how to cope with them. He goes on to say that since the episode of 'smut' on the 'China[?] Cane' he hasn't heard of any other diseases in Natal. He sends a tuber of an Aroid which was collected on the East Coast – possibly Mozambique - and describes the plant as being like an Amorphophallus. He also sends a corm of a Gladiolus from Delagoa Bay, and enquires whether they would be interested in having a specimen of Hedyotis tenella. Page 1 of 2.
