Description
A shrub or small tree to 20 m tall; bole straight, sometimes fluted, by 90 cm girth; in high forest and common in secondary jungle; distributed throughout from Senegal to W Cameroons, and to Sudan, Uganda, Zaïre and Cabinda.The wood is hard, close-grained and cream-coloured (2, 4, 5). The stems are used for hut-poles in Liberia (1).The bark is reported to have unspecified medicinal use in Ghana (5).The leaf is used in Gabon (7, 8) and E Cameroun (6) as an emetic.The fruit, a pointed ellipsoid drupe about 1 .25 cm long, contains a kernel which is a favourite food of mona monkeys (Cercopithecus mona) in W Cameroons (3).
