Albizia antunesiana Harms. Kasakela Chimpanzee Reserve, 16 miles N of Kigoma (Buha District): The area stretches from the shore of L. Tanganyika (2500 ft) to the tops of rounded hills separated by valleys containing small streems. The hill tops are now almost pure grassland and reach the height of 5000ft. The lower parts of outwardly curved slopes covered with woodland are subject to burning. The trees are fairly close inplaces and the grass cover thick and coarse. These lower slopes end in a short cliff 10-20ft. high; between this and the beach there is 50-100 yards of flat sandy or gravelly lake bed soil now covered with sparse vegetation. In the valleys, mostly on thesteepest slopes, but also extending down the stream beds is dense rain forest. The separation between the forest and woodland is sharp and continued burning has forced the forest into smaller and smaller areas. The present conditions are, however, I imagine of long standing. There are areas of grassland on the first flattenings of the rounded hills as well as on the summits.
