Biography
Scottish collector from lnverurie, Aberdeenshire who was based in Japan (1866-1886) and latterly in Edinburgh, receiving his MA from Oxford University (1899). He is sometimes mistaken for his brother John Petrie Bisset, a desmidologist, or the Canadian mycologist John Bissett. Several taxa were named in his honour including Nephrodium bissetianum Baker (= Dryopteris bissetiana (Baker) C. Chr.) and Viola bissetii Maxim. Material at BM includes Japanese algae and bryophytes.
