Biography
American botanist interested in the grasses and particularly the genus Melica L. Born in Provo, Utah, William S. Boyle was the son of the principal at Brigham Young High School in Provo which the son attended and graduated from in 1933. Later he studied at the University of California and produced a cyto-taxonomic study of North American Melica species for a PhD thesis. This thesis was published in MadroƱo in 1945. By 1963 Boyle was working for the State University of Utah in Logan and continued to study cytology, experimental evolution and Melica species, describing several new varieties and a new section within this genus. In 1973 Boyle published the text book Laboratory Manual for Elementary Botany and he was married to Rowena Christensen.
