German decorator from Witten who settled in Namibia in 1914 at the colonial town of Lüderitz. He was a keen amateur collector and created a private herbarium in addition to collecting animals, minerals and archaeological finds. He donated his collection to the town in 1960 which formed the founding collections of the Eberlanz Museum. References in the literature to 'H. Eberlanz' probably refer to his private herbarium. He is commemorated by the genus Eberlanzia Schwantes in the Aizoaceae and the names of several other plants including the popular cultivated succulent Lithops eberlanzii Dinter & Schwantes (= Lithops karasmontana subsp. eberlanzii (Dinter & Schwantes ) D.T. Cole ). There is also an animal genus in the Solifugae named after him.
