American botanist and taxonomic authority on Solanaceae. Bohs' research interests include systematics, phylogeny and economic botany, particularly of Solanaceae and groups within Solanum. Lynn Bohs was born in St. Louis, Missouri, studying botany at the University of New Hampshire then biology at postgraduate level at Harvard. She gained her doctorate in 1986, writing her dissertation on Cyphomandra (Solanaceae). After her PhD, Bohs occupied roles at the universities of Vermont (1986-1989), Utah (1989-1997 and 2004-) and Duke (1997-1999), most recently as Professor at the University of Utah. She was on the Council of the American Society of Plant Taxonomists from 2001-2004 and previously the Board of Directors of the Organization of Tropical Studies (1990-1999). From 2004 she has been on the Steering Committee of the International Solanaceae Genome Initiative.
Since 1981, Bohs has made frequent collecting trips to countries including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Paraguay as well as Australia. She has written widely on Solanaceae, especially Solanum and has been a major contributor to the Solanaceae Source website produced by the Natural History Museum in London. In 1995 her paper on the transfer of Cyphomandra and its species to Solanum was published in Taxon. Her ongoing projects include the construction of an overall phylogeny for Solanum and related genera and more detailed studies of subgroups within the genus, in particular of economically useful species such as the tree tomato, Solanum betaceum. She is also working on floristic studies of Solanaceae in Costa Rica and North America.
