Argentine botanist. Nélida Sara Troncoso worked for many years at the Darwinian Institute of Botany, beginning not long after the death of its founder, Cristóbal Hicken, in 1933. Here she was a research botanist for over 50 years, studying the Verbenaceae of South America in particular. She married the director of the Darwinian Institute, Arturo Burkart, and together they developed it into a world renowned institution. Amongst her publications are The Verbenaceae of subtropical South America (Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay and Southern Brazil) (1974) and together with N. Bacigalupo, Troncoso published her husbands unfinished work Illistrated Flora of Entre Ríos (Argentina) between 1969 and 1987. She was involved in publishing the description of some one hundred species, all within the Verbenaceae family. Together with Burkart she had three children, their daughter became a plant physiologist, one son a plant ecologist and the other a chemist.
