Notes
The specimen cited is the only example of this species known from the F.Z. area, and it is somewhat unusual in having 2–seeded fruits which were probably 3 cm. long when fresh. M. kummel occurs in neighbouring parts of Tanzania and so may be expected from northern Malawi. M. kummel is closely similar to both M. zeyheri (no. 4) and M. obovata, its distribution overlapping that of the former. Sterile material of M. hummel can be distinguished from that of M. zeyheri by several differential, though not completely diagnostic, leaf characters: in M. hummel the petioles tend to be short, the lower leaf surface is normally glabrous and the venation inconspicuous; in M. zeyheri the petioles are longer, the lower leaf surface is often ferrugineous–pubescent and the tertiary venation raised.
