Adenodolichos punctatus var. decumbens Verdc. [family LEGUMINOSAE], in Kew Bull. 25: 67 (1971); in F.T.E.A., Leguminosae, Pap.: 706 (1971).
Notes
Pawek 2030 (c. 19.2 km south of Chitipa) has pink and magenta flowers. Since this taxon is equally distinct from both the others, subspecific status seems more appropriate.General note on the species. I have been tempted to return to treating subsp. punctatus and subsp. bussei as separate species and some may prefer to do so. They are not strict geographical subspecies, although there is a geographical element. Precocity of flowering is known to be variable, sometimes related to intensity and frequency of burning. Study of individual plants throughout the year is still needed. Brummitt 11517 (Malawi, Nkhotakota Distr., 17.vi.1970) has almost glabrous leaflets and I am sure is subsp. punctatus but the leafy shoot bears a terminal fruiting inflorescence and the flowers are white. Did this plant have precocious inflorescences earlier?; the habitat, wooded river banks, suggests not. Such intermediates are rare but suggest caution before reverting to specific rank. Adenodolichos bussei var. moxicoensis Torre described from Angola has much broader leaflets but is only known from the type. It is excluded from the description.
