Perennial woody herb, 30–90 cm tall; stems 1–many arising from a woody rootstock, indumentum variable but never silvery-appressed hairy. Leaves verticillate, simple or trifid, 15–45 mm long, segments 1–2.5 mm wide, margins outwardly rolled, midvein usually prominent, densely hairy above becoming subglabrous below. Inflorescence terminal, spicate, (1.5–)3–7(–10) cm long, (1.2–)2.1–2.5 cm broad, densely woolly; flowers alternate, congested; bracteoles oblong-lanceolate, 8–20 mm long. Calyx lobes narrowly triangular, ± 4 mm, woolly. Corolla blue-mauve, mauve, pink to pinkish-white, rotate to subcampanulate; limb 10–15 mm in diameter. Fertile anther cells oblong, ± 2 mm long. Capsule ovoid, 4–5 mm long, ± 3 mm in diameter, glabrous.
