Small to large evergreen tree 6–25 m. tall, much branched, with a dense rounded crown and often branched low down; stems glabrous. Leaf-blades elliptic to oblong-ovate, 7.8–22.6(–25) cm. long, 3.5–15.2 cm. wide, rounded to subacute at the apex, rounded, truncate or broadly cuneate and often unequal-sided at the base, glabrous save for small tufts of hair in the nerve-axils beneath; petiole (1–)1.7–3 cm. long; stipules lanceolate, 3.6–6 cm. long, 0.5–2 cm. wide, connate at the base and enclosing the terminal bud, soon circumscissile and deciduous. Flowers heterostylous, in umbels of (1–)2–7(–9) capitula, the capitula 4–9 mm. in diameter, 5–20-flowered; common peduncles 7–17.5 cm. long; secondary peduncles 0.8–4.5 cm. long, finely puberulous; many of the capitula bear a large coloured petiolate bract, greenish below, cream above with greenish yellow veins, produced on one of the lateral flowers, the lamina (3–)6–11.2 cm. long, 1.5–5.8 cm. wide, the petiole 0.6–2 cm. long. Calyx cupular, ± 2 mm. tall, of which 1 mm. is a free truncate rim. Corolla cream to yellow, the tube mostly greenish and the lobes bright yellow inside; tube 1.6–2.4 cm. long, widened at the apex, puberulous; lobes ovate-lanceolate, 3–7 mm. long, 1.2–4 mm. wide, margined and with thickened apices, hairy inside particularly near throat with yellow hairs; throat densely hairy. Ovary 3–4-locular; style 1.2 or 2.4 cm. long according to form; stigma-lobes 3.5–4.5 mm. long, at least exserted ones green. Syncarps ± 1.5 cm. in diameter; pyrenes broadly elliptic, much compressed, 5 mm. long, 4.5 mm. wide. Immature seeds 3.5 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, probably winged. Fig. 12 p. 147.
