Information
Perennial, from a short knotty rhizome, 90–150 cm. high. Leaf-blades flat, up to 60 cm. long and 12 mm. wide, glabrous or sparsely villous; ligule up to 5 mm. long. Panicle effuse, 15–40 cm. long, not much longer than broad; branches flexuous, scabrid, bearing spikelets towards their ends; glumes subequal, 6–7 mm. long, hyaline, acute to acuminate; lemma narrowly lanceolate-cylindric, convolute, 5–6 mm. long, appressed hairy all over, minutely bilobed at the apex; callus obtuse, 0.5 mm. long, bearded; awn persistent, 10–15 mm. long, straight, scaberulous, not twisted. DISTR. K1–6; T2, 3 also South Africa from the Peninsula to the Transkei, along the Drakensbergs and in a few areas of the Transvaal
