Branched herb, 0.45–1.2 m. tall; root-system of small extent, 9 x 6 cm., annual or biennial. Stem 3 mm. in diam. at the base. Leaves very thin, 3.5–14 x 1–6.5 cm., oblong-elliptic to ± lanceolate, acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, sparsely appressed pubescent above, minutely puberulous on venation beneath; petiole 0.3–2 cm. long; stipule setae up to 5 mm. long. Inflorescence a small head. Calyx tube 2 mm. long and wide; lobes deltoid, unequal, largest 3–4 x 1.5–2 mm. Corolla white or yellowish, glabrous or minutely puberulous on tube angles; tube 4–4.5 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide at the base, 0.8 mm. wide in the middle, expanded apically to 1.8 mm.; lobes 0.9 x 0.6 mm., tips inflexed. roughened, 3.8 mm. long overall; stigma lobes 0.9 mm. long the tips just exserted. Anthers 1 mm. long, just included; throat densely hairy and tube hairy below, papillate at the base. Fruiting inflorescence branched consisting of an umbel of 4 spikes, together with several truly terminal flowers in the axil; spikes 9–26 cm. long. Fruits 3.4–4 mm. long and broad, oblong-obtriangular, not elongate, calyx lobes persistent, reticulated and venose at their bases; beak 1.5 mm. tall.

Annual or perennial herb; stems glabrous. Leaves sessile; blade linear to linear-lanceolate, 6–55 x 1–4 mm, acute at the apex, glabrous or almost so; stipule sheath up to c. 0.5 mm long, with a few c. 0.3 mm long setae. Flowers isostylous or heterostylous, solitary or paired at the nodes; pedicels (3–)8–30 mm long. Calyx-lobes narrowly triangular, 0.5–2.5 mm long. Corolla white, lilac or mauve; tube 2–11 mm long; lobes 1–3 mm long. Capsule 2.2–5 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide, glabrous to shortly hairy; beak 0.8–1 mm long. Seeds brown, 0.2–0.4 mm long, reticulate.
