The Herbarium of the Instituto de Ecología, A.C. (XAL) was founded in 1975 in order to constitute the main tool to elaborate and publish the Flora of the state of Veracruz, and generally, as support to the study of the plant resources of the tropical regions of Mexico.
At the moment it houses three important collections: one of vascular plants consisting of 280,000 specimens, another one of fungi of around 50,000 and one of mosses of approximately 3,500. From the size of its collections and activity it forms the most important Herbarium in the Gulf of Mexico, and occupies third place at national level.
The Herbarium XAL has been pioneering in handling the collection of plants in computerized data bases; at the moment around 250,000 records are available for their consultation through REMIB.
