The Plant Resources Center of The University of Texas at Austin comprises two herbaria that are filed together but remain distinct:

  • The University of Texas Herbarium (TEX), which dates from about 1890.
  • The Lundell Herbarium (LL), which was incorporated into the Plant Resources Center during the 1970s and 1980s.

With about one million specimens (almost all of them of vascular plants), the Plant Resources Center is a major center for the study of the flora of the New World, with especially significant holdings from Texas, the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America. Specimen data for over 400,000 Texas and Mexican specimens are available on-line. The Plant Resources Center is closely associated with a very strong academic program in phylogenetic and molecular systematics and traditional plant taxonomy.

Materials of Special Interest:

  • (TEX) and (LL) are especially strong in Asteraceae, Celastraceae, Eriocaulaceae, Fabaceae, Krameriaceae, Malvaceae, Myrsinaceae, Rhamnaceae, and Verbenaceae, among others
  • (TEX) and (LL) have unparalleled representation of the floras of Texas, north-central and northeastern Mexico, and eastern Guatemala and Belize.
  • The type collection houses over 8000 types, including the main sets of the types of D. S. Correll, M. C. Johnston, C. L. Lundell, H. N. Moldenke, G. L. Nesom, and B. L. Turner. Over 80% of the types are from Latin America, and over half of the rest are from the U.S. states bordering Mexico. Over one-quarter of the types are holotypes.
  • Several smaller but very important herbaria have been incorporated into the herbaria of the PRC. The personal herbaria of Harold N. Moldenke and Sidney F. Blake are now part of (LL), while the Robert Runyon Herbarium (RUNYON) and a major part of the personal herbarium of Paul A. Fryxell are now part of (TEX).
  • First or otherwise critical sets of many collectors who have worked intensively in northern Latin America reside here, including those of E. Contreras, P. A. Fryxell, P. H. Gentle, J. Henrickson, G. B. Hinton, J. Hinton, M. C. Johnston, C. L. Lundell, E. Matuda, and C. H. Muller.
