Tbilisi botanical garden is located in the south of Sololaki ridge , in the gorge of Tsavkis water or Leghvta water. Since the medieval centuries the royal gardens were developed on this place, but after the Russian occupation the garden came under the possession of the state , the botanical garden was named in 1845 when it was officially opened. In 1896-1904 the extra area was added to the garden from western side, and in 1932-1958 the north-east ridge of Tabori mountain and the ex- Muslim cemetery on the right bank of the river Tsavkisi water was joined to its territory , the tomb of the famous Azerbaijanian writer Mirza Patal Akhundov is still remained on that place. The river Tsavkisi water divides the 128 hectare botanical garden in two parts. Few bridges cross the river but the most distinguished one among them, crossing the water fall. is constructed in 1914. The flora of China , Himalayas, Japan, North America, Turkey, Siberia , Mediterranean are all gathered at the botanical garden, here the most frequent species are available to be seen : wine colored- red- peony “Maiko”, and Iberian Iris that is at the brink of extension.
The gate of garden is from the side of the street, the second gate also exists, in a tube on L. Asatiani street, the tube was constructed in 1909-1914 in the slope of Sololaki. The botanical garden is nice to see on every season of the year and with its plants creates an oasis in the middle of the city enabling the population to enjoy going out into nature without leaving the city. Over 3500 varieties of flora exist in the garden.
