The Herbarium of the University of Seville includes materials from the Iberian Penisula (especially Andalusia), Balearic and N Africa. More than 350.000 sheets of Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms. Currently consists of two collections of plants:
- The Historical Herbaria, containing 11,964 plants perfectly studied and cataloged, are virtually unknown to the scientific community. They contain numerous plants of the scientific expeditions of the late eighteenth century that served to describe the new species discovered in unexplored territories.
- The Modern Herbarium, created with inputs from all botanists of University of Seville since 1996, is composed of about 160,000 plants identified, registered and included in wardrobes. In addition to these materials, there are about 150,000 packaged plants that need to be identified, labeled, registered, poisoned and included in the Herbarium.
A large part of the materials are from Andalusia and North Africa, so this herbarium becomes one of the most important in the Mediterranean region. Therefore, it is obligatory reference for all European researchers devoted to study the biodiversity of these areas, as well as for all Spanish monographies.
