The Herbarium of the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich was founded in 1991. It contains approximately 140 000 specimens, exclusively phanerogams. The Herbarium is an important resource for taxonomic research and floristic checklists. Most of the plants are from the Mediterranean, Chile, Peru, and the dry regions of Asia. The Herbarium is home to one of the most important collections of plants from Iran and Afghanistan. It also has an important collection of the genus Astragalus, information about which is available at http://www.botanik.biologie.uni-muenchen.de/botsyst/thesau1.html.
