Herbarium LISU was established in 1839 as part of the Botany Department at the Faculty of Sciences, but its collections include earlier material from the Ajuda Royal Cabinet and the Academy of Sciences. Currently, the Herbarium conducts student training and research in collaboration with the Faculty of Sciences (University of Lisbon). The Herbarium's specimens are mainly spontaneous species from Portugal (the continent and the islands of Azores and Madeira) and its former colonies, but there are collections from all continents. Herbaria include vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and fungi, estimated at more than 200,000 specimens.

Materials of Special Interest
